How to install and  use under MS Windows

How-to for new self-installing distribution

This section describes the installation procedure you need to follow if you have chosen the new self-installing method based on a professional Windows installer (for instructions on the old PKZIP-based distribution scroll down).

When you click on the download link you will be saving on your computer an executable named instesp.exe. The location where you saved this executable is irrelevant to the installation process.

To begin the installation you need to double-click on instesp.exe. This will begin the installer and you need to follow the step-by-step instructions.

Please note, that the installer assumes a default location for the ESP installation. It does gives you the option, however,  to change the installtion directory and you should do so if you don't like the default location. The functionality of the installation will not be affected.

IMPORTANT:  An important difference between this new installation method and the previous PKZIP-based method is that the new installer registers ESP with Windows and provides an "Unistall" option. Thus if you want to unistall ESP you need to choose the "Add/Remove Programs" panel from the "Control Panel" and from the listed programs choose "ESP". This will remove ESP from your computer and clean after it. This is unlike the old PKZIP-based distribution which was not registered with Windows and you could simply unistalled by deleteing the ESP directory.

IMPORTANT:  During the installation process you're given the option to change the installation directory for ESP.  Based on the chosen location, the installer creates shortcuts and other links that will not function properly if later you move the ESP directory. If you want to move the ESP directory after it has been installed you need to unistall ESP (see above note) and re-install using the new location. Note that if you have created you own support files (*.ESS, *.ESJ etc.) in the ESP directory you need to save them in another directory before you attempt this migration because the unistaller will delete them, and since they are not part of the standard distribution, they will not be re-created when ESP is re-installed at the new location.

HOW TO USE

The installer creates three shortcuts for each of the programs (ESP, ESPJAN, and ESPCAM). This shortcuts are recognizable by their "yellow lamp" icons. These shotcuts apper under the "Start" windows menu in the program group "ESP". They also appear in the root directory for ESP. To start any of the three programs simply click on the appopriate shortcut. (This is different from the older PKZIP-based distribution where you could only launch ESP directly).

Please do not start multiple sessions of the same program because there will be file-sharing violations and you'll get error messages.

With this new distribution you no longer can start the execution of a different code from within suZi. You can still stop
and restart the same code however (i.e. you cannot stop ESP to start ESPJAN within the same suZi session, but you can
stop ESP and restart ESP within the same suZi session).

How-to for PKZIP-based distribution

This section describes the installation procedure you need to follow if you have chosen the old PKZIP-based installation method.

When you click on the download link for Windows you will be saving on your hard disk a self-extracting archive, named ESPGWIN.EXE

When you double-click on ESPGWIN.EXE it will unpack is contents in the directory c:\GESPDIR  (called C:\GESPDIR, unless you chose to change the name).

In this directory you should find the following files and  folders:
BIN              <DIRECTORY>
ESP.EXE
ESPCAM. EXE
ESPJAN.EXE
SUZI.EXE
README. TXT
WCRGAS1. ESJ
ESP.SUD
SETUP.ESS
STEP. ESV
CFR.ESS
XK.ESS

Please note that in order for ESP to function properly you must leave all these files, as well as the folder BIN, in the same location relative to the parent directory as they were originally unpacked. You can still  rename the parent directory (e.g from C:\GESPDIR to D:\ESPFOLD), but do move any of the included files relative to the parent directory.

HOW TO USE

This section describes how to use ESP if you download the old PKZIP-baded installtion. If you have downloaed the new self-installing distribution please scroll up and read the corresponding "how to use" section.

The graphical versions of ESP, ESPJAN, and ESPCAM use an independent graphical user interface called SUZI.

You SHOULD NOT try to run ESP, ESPJAN, or ESPCAM directly (i.e. DO NOT click on ESP, ESPJAN or ESPCAM).

Instead launch the GUI executable called SUZI. You will recognize SUZI by its "yellow lamp" icon. Click on the icon to start SUZI.

By default SUZI will launch ESP. If you you want to run ESPJAN or ESPCAM you can use the STOP button in SUZI's toolbar to stop the execution of ESP. That will leave SUZI's main window active. Then use the "open folder" icon (or the File menu item) to start a new execution for ESPJAN or ESPCAM (be careful not to launch SUZI itself, which is also listed in the list of executables).

If you are using a DOS command-line window to start SUZI you can actually start ESP, ESPJAN and ESPCAM directly, i.e.

C:\GESPDIR> SUZI ESP (will launch SUZI and execute ESP)
C:\GESPDIR> SUZI ESPJAN (will launch SUZI and execute ESPJAN)
C:\GESPDIR> SUZI ESPCAM (will launch SUZI and execute ESPCAM).

IMPORTANT: Please do not run multiple sessions of the same program because there will be file sharing violations.
